Get The Facts
According to the America Parkinson’s Disease Association, Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system affecting more than 1.5 million people in the United States. Clinically, the disease is characterized by a decrease in spontaneous movements, gait difficulty, postural instability, rigidity and tremor. Men and women alike are affected. The frequency of the disease is considerably higher in the over-60 age group, even though there is an alarming increase of patients of younger age.
PARKINSON’S WELLNESS
The Parkinson’s Wellness Program is a partnership with the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast and is a gym style program that meets three times a week for two hours. This program is designed to help participants maintain and improve their strength and endurance using gym equipment. The class fosters social support that comes from moving with a group of people all familiar with what it means to live with Parkinson’s. An exercise physiologist facilitates this class. An initial evaluation by a Brooks Rehabilitation therapist is required prior to beginning this program. There is a monthly free associated with this program.
